A recent experience led graphic journalist Ben Shannon to delve into the world of international whistling competitions. Intrigued by the idea after watching a quiz show, Shannon and his daughter, Sumire, signed up for the Masters of Musical Whistling mailing list on a whim.
Initially taking the contest lightly, Shannon viewed it as a fun activity to share with his daughter during the pandemic. Both Shannon and Sumire had a knack for whistling, a skill passed down through the family, and decided to submit audition tapes when the opportunity arose.
To their surprise, they were selected to compete in person at the Masters of Musical Whistling competition in Los Angeles. Despite initial reservations stemming from a past of ironic detachment, Shannon found himself embracing the sincerity and passion of the competition. Alongside his daughter, he delivered standout performances, earning Sumire a silver medal and Shannon a gold in the level one adults category.
