Counter terrorism authorities are now taking charge of the investigation into the death of Ann Widdecombe after revealing the discovery of new evidence. The move follows the ongoing questioning of a 28-year-old man suspected of killing the 78-year-old former Cabinet Minister, with fresh footage emerging of his arrest. Laurence Taylor, Head of National Counter Terrorism Policing, stated that they are leading the investigation based on new information obtained in collaboration with Devon and Cornwall Police. Emphasizing the urgency of the inquiry, Taylor mentioned the pursuit of various leads to determine the motive behind the attack.
The main suspect, a White British male, faced a re-arrest on suspicion of involvement in acts of terrorism by Counter Terrorism Policing South East. This development occurred two days after his initial arrest in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, approximately 270 miles away from Widdecombe’s residence in Haytor, Devon, where she was discovered deceased. With the suspect now held under the Terrorism Act, authorities continue to delve into the case, aided by specialist anti-terrorism officers who had been supporting local detectives in the murder investigation since its initiation.
In further examination of the case, detectives have been studying CCTV footage showing the suspect loading a wooden stick into a red Vauxhall Corsa on the day of the incident. Neighbors described him as a solitary individual who withdrew from social interactions following his father’s passing last December. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood updated Parliament on the ongoing investigation, highlighting that the suspect was not previously flagged by the government’s counter extremism program.
