A passenger aircraft had to make an unscheduled landing in the United Kingdom after declaring an emergency during the flight.
The American Airlines flight encountered issues over the North Sea, diverting from its intended route to land in the UK. Departing from Zurich Airport at 11:54 am yesterday, the AA93 flight was originally bound for Philadelphia International Airport. Shortly after take-off, the crew indicated that there were problems onboard.
The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, with a capacity of 234 passengers, took off normally from Zurich, climbing to its cruising altitude of 36,000 feet and heading northwest over German airspace. However, about one hour and 15 minutes into the scheduled eight-hour flight, issues arose as the aircraft flew between Belgium and the eastern coast of the UK.
The crew promptly informed air traffic control of an unspecified onboard emergency by transmitting a “Squawk 7700” emergency code to ground officials. Flight tracking data showed the Dreamliner abandoning its transatlantic journey and initiating a rapid descent over the UK.
Air traffic controllers prioritized the aircraft, collaborating with the pilots to arrange a diversion for the plane to land at London Heathrow Airport.
The flight landed at London Heathrow at 12:30 pm before departing for Philadelphia at 1:55 pm. American Airlines confirmed to the Mirror that the unexpected landing was due to a medical emergency involving a passenger.
In a separate incident, an American Airlines pilot had to make a distressing call to air traffic controllers before landing on Sunday, as a man reportedly bit another passenger onboard. The flight was approaching Philadelphia when the disruptive passenger became unruly.
Audio from the pilot’s call captured him saying, “I don’t know if he’s hallucinating or whatever, but he just bit a passenger, and he’s trying to fight everybody.” The pilot then requested emergency medical and law enforcement assistance, ending with a remark to a controller about the challenging day.
