An elderly grandfather with disabilities expressed shock after being ejected from an Asda store amid a dispute regarding a mobility scooter. Tony Daniels, 73, residing in Mossley Hill, Liverpool, recounted the incident that occurred at a Widnes town center supermarket on June 18.
According to Tony, he was surrounded by security personnel and instructed to leave the premises when he declined to provide his personal details in order to use a mobility scooter within the store. Notably, Tony mentioned that he is not required to provide such information when shopping at his local Asda branch on Smithdown Road.
Asda explained that it is standard procedure to request some information from individuals using mobility scooters in their stores for safety reasons. The company has reached out to Tony to clarify this policy, as reported by the Liverpool Echo.
The retired builder detailed that he had requested to utilize a mobility scooter trolley at the Widnes Road Asda but was informed by a security guard that he must disclose his personal information. Refusing to comply, Tony requested to speak with a manager.
Describing the incident, Tony, who relies on two walking sticks for mobility, stated that he was approached by multiple security guards after the manager accused him of having a negative attitude and demanded he leave the premises immediately.
Expressing his dismay, Tony stressed that the treatment he received was distressing, emphasizing that his disability posed no threat to anyone. He contrasted this experience with his visits to the Asda store on Smithdown Road, where staff readily assist him with obtaining a mobility scooter and shopping needs.
The ordeal deeply affected Tony, causing emotional distress and anxiety. He expressed his vulnerability as a 73-year-old with health issues, relying on walking aids, and feeling overwhelmed during the store confrontation.
An Asda spokesperson highlighted the company’s safety protocols, noting that it is customary to request details from mobility scooter users to ensure a secure shopping environment for all customers and employees. As part of their efforts to address the situation, Asda has communicated their policy to Mr. Daniels and extended the offer to discuss any further concerns directly with him.
