A mother who tragically lost her 15-year-old son in a river drowning incident is advocating for families to engage in a crucial life-saving conversation with their children. Nearly five years ago, Thandolwethu Ndlovu, affectionately known as Thando, lost his life in the River Trent. His mother, Nombulelo Ndlovu, fondly recalls him as a caring, genuine, and charming teenager whose presence brought joy to those around him.
Nombulelo, a supporter of the Mirror’s ‘Save Lives for Sam water safety campaign, emphasizes Thando’s positive impact on others and the void his absence has left. The risk of drowning is reported to be significantly higher for Black or Black British children compared to White children, as per the National Child Mortality Database. Shockingly, research by the Black Swimming Association indicates that almost half of Black and Brown individuals surveyed lacked knowledge on water safety measures.
Reflecting on her past oversight regarding water safety discussions with Thando, Nombulelo acknowledges her lack of awareness and urges parents and teenagers to comprehend the perils of open water to prevent further tragedies. She stresses the importance of initiating conversations about water safety, particularly among Black households, where such discussions may be overlooked. Nombulelo emphasizes the need for action from both parents and the government to prioritize water safety education, advocating for changes in school curricula to address this vital issue.
Following Thando’s untimely death, Nombulelo has become a vocal advocate for open water safety awareness, collaborating with the Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service to share her family’s heartbreaking story. She encourages the public to watch a poignant video documenting Thando’s story on YouTube, including the distressing 999 call made by his friend on the tragic day. Nombulelo hopes that by sharing their experience, they can prevent similar incidents and honor Thando’s memory by saving lives.
