Kate Howson initially mistook an itchy red patch on her back for a rash from carrying a rucksack while on holiday. However, the discovery turned out to be life-changing for the 32-year-old Brit. Kate and her partner Rhys had the opportunity to attend two destination weddings, one in New Zealand in February 2024 and another in Thailand later that month. Opting for a sabbatical from work, the couple embarked on a travel adventure coinciding with both events.
During their travels, Kate noticed an itch on her back where a mole was located. Concerned by the redness around it, she sought advice from her sister-in-law, a doctor, who recommended getting it examined upon returning home. By March, the area on Kate’s back had darkened and changed shape. A visit to her GP led to a referral to the dermatology department at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff.
Specialists at the hospital diagnosed the growth as a melanoma, urging immediate removal. Further tests revealed that the cancer had progressed to stage three, prompting a sentinel lymph node biopsy to track its potential spread. Subsequent treatment options included targeted cancer drugs due to Kate’s specific mutation.
Facing potential impacts on her fertility from the treatment, Kate underwent rounds of IVF, but with disappointing results. Despite the setbacks, she and Rhys decided to prioritize her health and put family plans on hold. Throughout this challenging time, Kate sought counseling support to navigate the emotional toll of her diagnosis and fertility struggles.
As a research partnership manager at Social Care Wales, Kate recognized the power of sharing personal experiences and stories. She emphasized the importance of sun safety and regular skin checks, given her unexpected battle with melanoma. Kate’s journey serves as a reminder of the significance of early detection and seeking medical attention for any concerning changes in moles.
Despite the hardships faced, Kate remains vigilant about her health and encourages others to prioritize regular skin examinations and proactive sun protection measures. She and Rhys continue to embrace their love for travel and outdoor adventures while staying cautious about sun exposure.
