A massive fire is currently raging through a popular tourist area in Italy, leading to the evacuation of over 100 individuals. The extensive wildfire has spread to Santo Stefano Quisquina town in the Agrigento province, located close to Palermo in Sicily. Surrounding regions of this favored vacation destination are heavily impacted, with large clouds of dark smoke rising into the sky.
As a precautionary measure, more than 100 people have been evacuated due to concerns about nearby facilities such as an oxygen depot, a medical clinic, a petrol station, and a fireworks factory being threatened by the flames. A significant firefighting operation is ongoing, with Canadair aircraft deployed for aerial firefighting support.
The fire’s intensity is fueled by sirocco winds, a hot and dry wind originating from the Sahara Desert and blowing northward across the Mediterranean Sea into southern Europe. The mayor of Santo Stefano di Quisquina, Francesco Cacciatore, has described the situation as “dramatic.” Residents in the Canfuto and Bosco districts have been urged to evacuate immediately, and road closures are in effect on the 118 state road Corleonese Agrigentina.
In other parts of Agrigento, the fire has encroached upon the Andromeda Theatre. Additional wildfires have been reported in Catania, prompting firefighting responses to at least 11 separate incidents. Along the motorway connecting Palermo and Catania, fires have also been observed, causing blackouts in central Palermo. Families not directly in the fire’s path have taken precautions to barricade themselves indoors to protect against the smoke.
Reports indicate that the intense heat has caused railings and doorknobs to become red-hot. Smoke has enveloped numerous neighborhoods, with temperatures in the city exceeding 40 degrees Celsius by 4 am.
