The US State Department has issued a global alert for American travelers, cautioning about potential threats from factions supporting Iran. This advisory arises amidst ongoing tensions in the Middle East, with the US and Iran engaged in hostilities despite a previously agreed memorandum that has since been voided.
Following an Iranian missile and drone attack in Jordan that resulted in the deaths of two American servicemen and one missing, Iran has asserted responsibility for assaults on US military installations in Kuwait and Bahrain within the last day. Concurrently, the US Central Command announced a series of strikes for the ninth consecutive night as explosions reverberated across the region.
The State Department has advised Americans worldwide, particularly those in the Middle East, to remain vigilant, heed security guidance from local US embassies and consulates, and exercise increased caution due to heightened tensions that may lead to unforeseen escalations, potentially causing flight disruptions and temporary airspace closures.
Quoting the State Department, it highlights the complex security environment in the Middle East and the necessity for continued vigilance and monitoring of developing situations by individuals in the region. The warning emphasizes that US diplomatic facilities globally are at risk of targeting by groups sympathetic to Iran.
Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Kazem Gharibabadi, accused the US of violating agreements following deadly strikes in the country. The US retaliated by targeting military installations and communication networks to counter Tehran’s actions in the Strait of Hormuz, prompting Iran to launch a retaliatory strike in Syria and target a US aircraft at Jordan’s Aqaba airport.
Reportedly, several cities in Iran were attacked, including Tabriz, Chabahar, Konarak, Bandar Mahshahr, and Bandar Imam Khomeini. Additionally, two oil tankers were said to have exploded while crossing the strait, a claim disputed by CENTCOM.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) warned that continued US actions would jeopardize the safe passage of petrochemical products through the strait and threatened punitive measures in response.
