Five individuals lost their lives while attempting to rescue a struggling swimmer in a river, as confirmed by the police.
The tragic incident took place on Sunday, July 19, along the Scioto River in Powell, Ohio. A person went into the river for a swim, leading to a chain of events where others who tried to help also found themselves in distress, according to Delaware County Sheriff Jeffrey Balzer.
Following the incident, rescue crews were alerted by a motorist who saw a distressed child seeking assistance near the river. Subsequently, two women were discovered and pronounced dead at a hospital on Sunday, with the bodies of three men found in the river the next day, as per Tracy Whited, a spokesperson for the Delaware County Sheriff’s Department.
The river’s water levels were significantly high and fast-flowing on the day of the incident, indicated by data from a U.S. Geological Survey water gauge near the dam. The flow rate on Sunday was recorded at around 350 cubic feet (10 cubic meters) per second, a substantial increase over a brief period.
This tragedy occurred shortly after a flash flood in southern Utah claimed the lives of five individuals during a hiking trip in the red rock canyons.
The child who sought help has been placed under the care of family services, along with another child under 10 years old, while authorities are in the process of informing the victims’ families.
Sheriff Balzer emphasized the importance of understanding one’s swimming abilities and being cautious near water bodies. He advised individuals to assess their swimming skills and ensure there are others present to alert authorities in case of emergencies.
