An educator took a spontaneous trip to France for a day, highlighting the affordability compared to a typical outing in the UK.
Claire Howard embarked on a brief adventure to Beauvais, France, relishing in a day of dining, sightseeing, and sunshine, all wrapped up before midnight. Securing a pair of return tickets with Ryanair for just £27 a month beforehand, the 48-year-old found the journey quite economical.
Commencing from Birmingham early in the morning at around 7:30 am, the outbound flight led to a return at 11 pm. With a lift from her husband to the airport, Claire hopped on a £1.80 bus to Beauvais, a mere 15-minute ride. The total expense for the entire excursion, encompassing flights, transport, meals, and beverages, tallied up to an estimated £70, according to the mother.
Hailing from Birmingham, Claire shared, “I’ve visited Paris multiple times and opted not to travel from Beauvais due to the high costs and bustling nature of Paris.”
“The allure of exploring Beauvais itself for a laid-back day of meandering, dining, and sipping intrigued me. Upon spotting the £27 return airfare on Skyscanner, I decided to seize the opportunity.”

The English teacher’s morning was spent exploring the city’s weekly Saturday market, indulging in coffee and a pain au chocolat for a mere £4. Following this, she relaxed with a beverage in the town square, enjoying live music before opting for a £10 Uber ride to Plan d’Eau du Canada, a popular lakeside spot.
For lunch, she curated an £8 French-style picnic comprising a supermarket baguette, cheese, and a small wine bottle, relishing it while reading and sunbathing by the water. Claire’s agenda also included visits to Beauvais Cathedral and the neighboring Musée de l’Oise, both offering free admission.
As the day wound down, Claire dined on Pad Thai at a nearby Thai eatery for approximately £10 before heading back to the airport for her return flight in the evening. She also bought an £8 bracelet as a keepsake from her excursion.
