The 1915 Çanakkale Bridge, stretching 2,203 meters, connects Europe and Asia, surpassing Japan’s Akashi Kaikyo Bridge in length. Opened in March 2022, the bridge reduces travel times significantly, cutting ferry journeys by up to 93%. Named in honor of Turkey’s history, the bridge symbolizes the Ottoman victory in World War I and the founding of the Republic of Turkey in 1923.
Costing €2.5 billion, the bridge signifies Turkey’s progress and future aspirations. President Erdogan emphasized the bridge’s significance, referring to it as a symbol of unity and progress for the region. Despite currently holding the title of the world’s longest suspension bridge, the Çanakkale Bridge might soon be surpassed by Italy’s proposed bridge project connecting the mainland to Sicily, spanning a proposed 3,300 meters.
Italy’s prime minister, Georgia Meloni, expressed determination in pursuing the ambitious project, highlighting its strategic importance for Italy’s development. However, concerns have been raised about potential challenges such as seismic activity, strong currents, and environmental impacts on bird migration routes.
The proposed Sicily bridge project has a history of being reconsidered over the years, facing cancellations and revivals due to various factors. It remains to be seen if Italy will proceed with the construction of the world’s longest bridge, balancing progress with environmental and safety considerations.
