“UK Govt Grants £132.5M for After-School Clubs Amid Under-16 Social Media Ban”

The government has allocated £132.5 million to enhance after-school clubs in anticipation of a forthcoming social media ban for under-16s. This funding will support various activities aimed at engaging children and fostering the development of new skills, such as music groups, engineering clubs, debating societies, and football clubs.

According to the Department for Education, schools’ enrichment offerings will now be considered by Ofsted as part of their evaluation of personal development. The decision to increase funding is a response to the State of the Nation survey, which revealed that despite being highly connected digitally, today’s young people experience significant levels of isolation.

In light of this, the Prime Minister is expected to impose restrictions on children’s social media usage soon. A recent government consultation on the matter, which received approximately 120,000 responses before closing on May 26, indicated that 90% of parents supported the proposed restrictions.

Education Secretary Bridget Philipson emphasized the importance of providing every child with access to sports and creative arts opportunities, stressing that such experiences can boost confidence, ignite ambition, and help young individuals realize their potential. Similarly, Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy highlighted the need to ensure that all children, regardless of their background, have the chance to excel in the arts and creative fields.

Investing in these transformative opportunities is seen as a way to support the future prospects of children and remove barriers that hinder access to creative outlets, potentially paving the way for long-term career opportunities.
