Donald Trump expressed admiration for Andy Burnham, reiterating his belief that the Prime Minister had hinted at opening up the North Sea for drilling. The US President mentioned that during a recent conversation, he perceived a willingness from the PM to “open up” the oil field, a request Trump had been vocal about for some time.
In response, Burnham clarified that he had simply conveyed a “pragmatic” stance on North Sea drilling to Trump during a phone call the previous week. Emphasizing his intention to approach the matter pragmatically going forward, Burnham refrained from committing to full-scale drilling expansion.
Reports suggest that the PM is leaning towards adhering to Labour’s manifesto promise of refraining from granting new drilling licenses in the oil field. Instead, the plan might involve permitting “tie-backs,” which would enable incremental drilling near existing approved sites.
Trump, speaking from the White House, commended Burnham’s stance on the issue, stating that opening up the North Sea could lead to prosperity for the country. Conversely, he warned that maintaining the status quo would exacerbate the economic challenges, labeling the country as effectively bankrupt.
Regarding the issue of North Sea drilling, Burnham, during a visit to Cumbria, acknowledged the presence of a valuable resource and stressed the importance of not overlooking it, especially in times of economic hardship.
While the strategic benefits of North Sea drilling are apparent amid the ongoing Strait of Hormuz blockade, Trump’s advocacy for this cause stems from a personal history. In a past legal dispute with the Scottish government over wind turbine construction near his golf course, Trump’s opposition was rooted in aesthetic concerns and property views, ultimately culminating in a legal defeat in the UK Supreme Court.
