Donald Trump drew attention to the American casualty count in the ongoing conflict with Iran, insinuating that the number of deaths is notably lower compared to previous wars. The US president utilized the Truth Social platform to enumerate the fatalities of American soldiers in the Vietnam, Korean, Iraq, and Afghanistan wars in his characteristically boastful manner.
In a post labeled as the “Iran Military Conflict,” Trump stated the death toll as “18 DEAD.” This post elicited criticism from various politicians, who accused him of glorifying the loss of life and diminishing the gravity of the situation.
Following Iran’s attacks on US bases in Jordan and Iraq, resulting in the deaths of four American service members, the Pentagon confirmed that 18 Americans had been killed in the conflict, with around 500 others sustaining injuries.
Since the conflict commenced on February 28 with a coordinated US-Israeli strike on Tehran, over 3,400 individuals, including 1,568 civilians and at least 236 children, have perished in Iran. These figures were reported by Reuters, citing the US-based human rights organization HRANA, with no independent verification.
Trump’s remarks prompted strong reactions from politicians, with some condemning his apparent insensitivity towards the 18 casualties. Former Republican Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene criticized Trump for his post, accusing him of disregarding the lives of American soldiers. California Governor Gavin Newsom labeled Trump as “disgusting” and urged respect for the fallen troops.
Representative Jason Crow of Colorado expressed his displeasure with Trump’s post, emphasizing the significance of honoring the fallen service members. Trump announced his intention to visit the Dover Air Force Base to witness the dignified transfer of the four soldiers killed in the recent attacks in the Middle East, attributing their sacrifice to preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
