“Train Conductor Assaulted, Loses Tooth in Ticket Dispute”

A train conductor was viciously assaulted by a passenger after requesting to see the passenger’s ticket, resulting in the conductor losing a tooth and facing significant dental bills. The conductor, Peter Corley, aged 62, asked the passenger, Finley Seggie, 21, and his companion to disembark at the next station due to their lack of valid tickets on a train headed to York. In response, Seggie verbally abused the conductor before physically attacking him, causing injury.

The assault on December 14, 2024, led to Peter losing a tooth and incurring £3,000 in dental expenses, ultimately leading to him leaving his job. Subsequently, Seggie admitted to causing actual bodily harm (ABH) and was given a 16-month suspended sentence by Leeds Crown Court on May 5.

Peter, a grandfather from York and a former Lance Corporal in the army, expressed shock over the incident, emphasizing the unexpected nature of the attack. Despite his previous career in law enforcement, including time with West Yorkshire Police, Peter found himself unprepared for the assault during his work with Northern Trains, where he had been since 2018.

The assault occurred during a routine ticket inspection on the train route from Leeds to York, disrupting what had initially been a festive atmosphere. Following the attack, Peter received assistance from a fellow passenger who contacted the authorities. Despite the support from Northern Trains in covering his dental expenses, the traumatic incident led to Peter leaving his role in May 2025 due to mental health challenges.

Reflecting on his experience, Peter commended his former employer while highlighting the demanding nature of the job and the importance of helping passengers. He expressed a sense of loss for the role he enjoyed, underscoring the complexities and risks associated with being a ticket inspector.

The attacker, Seggie, was apprehended in February 2026 after being identified through CCTV footage, later admitting to the assault but claiming it was an act of self-defense. Peter, while satisfied with the legal outcome, expressed a desire for restorative justice, wishing for a face-to-face meeting with Seggie to understand the motivations behind the attack.

The incident serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by transport workers and the importance of ensuring their safety and well-being while carrying out their duties.
