A murder charge has been filed against a man in connection with the death of a woman who was battling Stage 4 breast cancer. The body of Vanessa Sanchez, 37, was discovered inside a suitcase at her residence in Berkeley, California, following a report to local authorities on May 30.
The property manager alerted the police after conducting a welfare check, leading to the grim finding of Ms. Sanchez’s remains concealed in a bin bag placed within a suitcase. Reports indicated that just days earlier, she was seen entering the apartment with Damarcus David Jones, who has since been accused of her murder.
Investigations revealed that Jones, 28, was last observed entering the residence with Ms. Sanchez on May 24, which marked the last day she was seen alive. Surveillance cameras captured Jones returning to the building with a large roller suitcase, as reported by NBC Bay Area.
Jones was apprehended on Tuesday, June 2, in Solano County, California, and charged with murder. According to court documents cited by NBC, Jones confessed to killing Ms. Sanchez and attempted to mask the odor in her apartment by opening windows and using an air purifier.
