Two individuals tragically lost their lives in a fatal paragliding accident in Colombia. Jhon Jaider Zúñiga, 27, and Marines Ussa Sarria, 31, were involved in the incident while paragliding in the Farallones area of the rural municipality of Piendamó in Colombia’s Cauca Department on Wednesday, July 29.
The pair reportedly encountered difficulties controlling their paraglider during a maneuver in the air, leading to a crash into a mountainside. Witnesses observed them losing stability abruptly before crashing onto the steep terrain below. Local residents quickly responded to the scene upon witnessing the accident, and rescuers promptly transported the victims to the hospital.
Upon arrival at the hospital, Jhon was found without vital signs, while Marines, a Piendamó resident, arrived in critical condition around 11:20 am. Marines sustained severe head injuries and multiple fractures, and despite medical efforts to stabilize her condition, she unfortunately succumbed to her injuries shortly after.
Authorities have initiated a thorough technical investigation to determine the cause of the accident, considering possibilities such as equipment malfunction, pilot error, or sudden strong winds. It is currently unclear whether the duo was on a recreational flight or if one of them was providing instruction to the other.
The Farallones hillside is a popular paragliding location known for its favorable air currents and picturesque mountain scenery.
