A unique tick-borne infection has been discovered in New York, with the first case reported recently. Michael Larkin, a 67-year-old individual, contracted the Bourbon virus after being bitten by two lone star ticks while working outdoors in Suffolk County. Unlike common tick-borne illnesses such as Lyme disease, the Bourbon virus is rare and challenging to identify accurately.
Larkin’s case was initially misdiagnosed, leading to treatment with antibiotics meant for Lyme disease, which proved ineffective against the Bourbon virus. Despite being infected in 2021, it took five years to confirm the diagnosis through specialized tests. Fortunately, Larkin recovered after spending five days in the hospital, although not all cases end as positively.
The Bourbon virus, named after the Kansas county where it was first observed, is primarily carried by aggressive lone star ticks identifiable by a white dot on their backs. These ticks thrive in wooded areas, tall grass, and brush, and depend on white-tailed deer for survival. The increasing deer population, coupled with milder winters and extended warm seasons, has led to a rise in tick numbers and their geographical spread.
Apart from Bourbon virus, lone star ticks can transmit alpha-gal syndrome, causing lifelong meat and dairy allergies, and ehrlichiosis, a bacterial infection with flu-like symptoms. To reduce the risk of tick bites, individuals are advised to avoid grassy and wooded areas, sticking to the center of trails in forested regions.
The discovery of the Bourbon virus in New York has raised concerns about the potential spread of this rare infection, highlighting the importance of preventive measures to minimize exposure to lone star ticks and other tick-borne diseases.
