A tragic incident occurred during a cosmetic surgery procedure as a mother lost her life, having invested her family’s entire savings into the treatment.
Sara Milena EcheverrÃa Alcendra, aged 31, underwent extensive preparations for liposuction and breast augmentation, following a significant weight loss of 4st 8lbs to qualify for the surgery. Unfortunately, shortly after entering the operating room at a cosmetic clinic in Colombia, she experienced a fatal medical emergency.
Her husband, Carlos Hernández, is now seeking explanations, emphasizing his wife’s good health and successful completion of all pre-operative medical assessments.
Authorities in Barranquilla have initiated an investigation into the circumstances of her passing, aiming to ascertain whether it resulted from an unforeseen medical complication or potential medical negligence.
According to Mr. Hernández, the couple had diligently saved for years to afford the operation, which ended up costing over £15,000 (65.3 million Colombian pesos). “That was my savings. It’s almost half a lifetime,” he expressed.
Prior to her surgery, Sara, who worked as a shopkeeper alongside her husband, had significantly reduced her weight from around 15st 7lbs after being advised by her surgeon to shed pounds before the cosmetic procedure. Mr. Hernández described her commitment to a five-month program involving a nutritionist, diet, and exercise that led to a weight loss of 4st 8lbs.
Despite undergoing comprehensive pre-surgical tests and receiving treatment to boost her haemoglobin levels, Sara passed all requirements for the procedure scheduled at the Diamanti Aesthetic Clinic in Barranquilla.
Mr. Hernández recounted their arrival at the clinic early in the morning, with Sara being taken into the operating room around 11 am for an expected seven-hour surgery. However, he was informed just over two hours later that something had gone terribly wrong.
Expressing his distress, Mr. Hernández highlighted the lack of clear explanations provided to him following his wife’s sudden demise. He emphasized the need for transparency in understanding the circumstances surrounding her death.
Upon Sara’s passing, her body was transferred for a post-mortem examination, with authorities looking into the precise cause of death and potential legal or professional responsibilities.
The family, having opted for a licensed clinic over an unregulated provider, now calls for a thorough investigation to determine any possible errors during the surgical procedure.
While the clinic has displayed permits from Colombia’s health authorities on social media, no official statement clarifying the events leading to Sara’s death has been released.
Left behind are Sara’s husband and their two children, aged 12 and eight, mourning the loss of their beloved wife and mother.
