A woman alleges that medical professionals repeatedly dismissed her pregnant-like abdomen as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) before uncovering it as advanced ovarian cancer.
Cydnie Malone reported experiencing symptoms such as rib pain, bloating, and nausea in July 2023. She described her bloating as so pronounced that she appeared pregnant, with her abdomen exhibiting unusual movements and sounds.
Despite elevated CA-125 levels, a marker for ovarian cancer, Cydnie was initially diagnosed with IBS and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). She sought medical attention at Epsom Hospital and St Helier Hospital multiple times over two years, but her concerns were allegedly disregarded.
After her abdomen continued to swell, Cydnie visited a different hospital in April 2025, where doctors drained fluid buildup but later diagnosed her with stage four ovarian cancer.
Following surgery to remove 15 tumors and a hysterectomy in May 2025, Cydnie underwent six rounds of chemotherapy and achieved remission by May 2026. She believes an earlier diagnosis could have prevented the cancer from spreading.
Encouraging others to be proactive about their health, Cydnie emphasizes the importance of seeking medical advice for symptoms of ovarian cancer. She highlights the significance of advocating for proper testing and treatment to potentially save lives.
The NHS Trust expressed regret over Cydnie’s experience and pledged to investigate further. Ovarian cancer, a condition affecting the ovaries, may not always present clear symptoms, underscoring the importance of early detection for effective treatment through surgery and chemotherapy.
