A man recounted a frightening experience when he was forcefully pushed against his door following a massive explosion that ripped through the countryside in Essex. Authorities declared a major incident as a large container of fertiliser exploded, leading to evacuations of residents from their homes. The explosion, which caused a massive fireball and shock wave felt up to 15 miles away, engulfed industrial units and a field. Firefighters continued to battle the flames at the scene after working through the night.
Scott Johnson, a 46-year-old wedding photographer from Chelmsford, witnessed the explosion and described the intense impact that pushed him into his studio door. He expressed astonishment at the chaos that ensued, with debris falling around him but fortunately escaping unharmed except for a slightly affected ear. Despite damages to his studio, Scott managed to salvage most of his valuable equipment.
Essex County Fire and Rescue Service dispatched 100 firefighters to the area during the peak of the emergency response, with evacuations conducted in the vicinity of the blast. Residents were advised to keep their doors and windows shut due to the significant smoke plumes. Approximately 50 firefighters remained on-site the next morning to extinguish the remaining fire.
Officials, including Group Manager Dave Walpole and Area Manager Dave Bond, provided updates on the situation, assuring the public of safety measures and ongoing efforts to control the fire. They emphasized the need for caution, keeping doors and windows shut if near the scene due to smoke concerns. Investigations into the cause of the fire were set to be conducted thoroughly.
