A 14-year-old girl named Shelby Quigley has been honored for her bravery in rescuing a drowning 15-year-old boy named Lotus Bowker. Shelby courageously jumped into the River Wyre, shedding her heavy clothes and boots to pull Lotus to the surface amid strong currents. Despite facing repeated submersion herself, Shelby persevered, holding Lotus above water until a man joined in and brought the boy to safety. Despite the rescue efforts, Lotus sadly passed away the next day.
Shelby, who was on a Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Expedition at the time, has received the prestigious Royal Humane Society Silver Medal for her exceptional courage in attempting to save a life. Andrew Chapman, Secretary of the Royal Humane Society, commended Shelby’s actions, emphasizing that she provided the boy with the best chance of survival.
An inquest revealed that Lotus, who had a Developmental Learning Disorder, entered the river against advice due to his limited swimming ability. Shelby, avoiding cold water shock, swam to Lotus’s location and attempted to keep him afloat before Neil Quinn and an off-duty anaesthetist, Steve Wiggans, intervened to assist in rescuing Lotus.
Despite extensive efforts, Lotus succumbed to drowning, with the disorder contributing to the tragic outcome. Shelby’s remarkable bravery and selflessness in the face of danger have earned her widespread recognition as a true heroine.
