“Suspended Sentence for Speeding Driver in Fatal Accident”

A 21-year-old driver, Rosie Hanson, received a suspended 16-month prison sentence for the unintentional killing of pedestrian Ryan Phillips while speeding to deliver a pizza. The tragic incident occurred on Marine Parade in Sheerness, Kent, as Ryan and his girlfriend, Sophie Rowe, were walking to celebrate his IT technician apprenticeship.

Hanson’s speeding VW Golf struck the couple, with Ms. Rowe sustaining injuries to her legs and witnessing the fatal injury to Mr. Phillips. Subsequent investigations revealed that Hanson was driving well above the speed limit, reaching speeds between 54 to 68mph before the accident.

During the court proceedings, it was noted that Hanson’s reckless driving, exacerbated by her excessive speed and abrupt steering, led to the fatal collision. The judge highlighted the impact of Hanson’s actions, emphasizing that while her young age and low risk of re-offending were considered, the loss of life due to her negligence was irreplaceable.

In victim impact statements, Ms. Rowe described the deep loss of her partner, detailing their future plans and the profound impact of his absence. Similarly, Mr. Phillips’ mother expressed the devastating impact of losing her son, emphasizing the lasting pain and grief caused by the tragic incident.

Despite the remorse expressed by Hanson in a letter to the court, she was sentenced to unpaid work, a driving ban for three years, and was required to pass an extended driving test. The judge’s decision aimed to reflect the severity of the offense while acknowledging Hanson’s potential for rehabilitation and the ongoing impact of the tragedy on the victims’ families.
