“Welsh Couple to Raise, Eat Guinea Pigs in Eco-Friendly Home”

A married couple in rural Wales have revealed their intentions to raise and consume guinea pigs after receiving approval to construct an eco-friendly residence. Dave and Mayu Phillips obtained the green light from Pembrokeshire County Council for their project, which incorporates the rearing of “small-scale livestock” for meat production.

Situated in a sought-after area in south Pembrokeshire near popular tourist destinations like Tenby and Saundersfoot, the site will not only house guinea pigs but also pigeons and rabbits to support their sustainable living endeavors.

During a planning committee session, Mr. Phillips expressed his commitment to the region, stating that the initiative is his way of positively contributing to its future. The proposed development includes an environmentally friendly dwelling, increased cultivation of honey and walnuts, and the upkeep of small livestock.

Addressing queries from Councillor Mark Carter regarding their choice of meat, Mr. Phillips clarified that the guinea pigs bred are distinct from those kept as pets, likening them to large rabbits bred for meat production. The project aligns with the One Planet Development concept, a Welsh planning policy encouraging sustainable living and working on personal land, enabling construction on rural plots usually restricted from development.

In support of the One Planet movement, Mr. Phillips emphasized the importance of living sustainably on a single planet and advocated for practical steps to achieve this goal. The One Planet Council endorses such initiatives, highlighting the benefits of reducing ecological footprints to promote a more sustainable lifestyle.
