An incident involving a suspected drone near the runways has led to the closure of a major European airport. Munich Airport is currently shut down, with all flights grounded according to reports from local news in Germany. Federal Police are on-site investigating after a potential unauthorized flying object was sighted.
Operations at Munich Airport came to a halt around 9 am following reports of a “suspicious observation.” Federal Police confirmed the spotting of a potentially unauthorized flying object near the runway. By 10:05 am, BILD reported that the all-clear signal was given after a search by the Federal Police yielded no suspicious findings.
Passengers aboard a plane were informed of the sudden airport closure via an announcement before takeoff. They were advised that the airport would remain closed until “at least 10 am” as a helicopter was dispatched to search for the drone. Several police officers are conducting a thorough search of the airport premises for any clues related to the suspected drone, with a helicopter also deployed for assistance.
The temporary closure of the airport has resulted in the suspension of all flights. Stefan Bayer, a Munich Federal Police spokesman, stated that the airport shutdown was prompted by reports of a ‘drone’ in the vicinity. Pilots reported a “suspicious observation” at approximately 9 am, indicating the possible presence of an unauthorized flying object, which could have been a drone.
