“Hotel Scam Alert: Guests Warned After Security Breach”

Hotel guests are being cautioned to remain vigilant against deceptive scam messages following a security breach at a prominent hotel chain. Personal information of guests who had reservations at one of the chain’s hotels was exposed over a six-month period.

BWH Hotels, the parent company overseeing WorldHotels, Best Western Hotels & Resorts, and Sure Hotels, informed customers about the breach via email. The company disclosed that certain guests’ names, email addresses, phone numbers, home addresses, and reservation details were accessed between October 14, 2025, and April 22, 2026. Fortunately, sensitive financial data was not stored in the compromised system and remained secure.

Efforts were promptly taken to halt unauthorized access and reinforce security measures to prevent any future breaches. Guests were advised to be cautious of unsolicited communications such as emails, texts, WhatsApp messages, or calls related to their hotel stays to avoid falling prey to potential scammers.

Privacy experts have raised concerns not only about the stolen data but also about the potential misuse of the information obtained. Scammers could leverage hotel booking details to create more convincing fraudulent schemes by referencing actual stays, dates, locations, or reservation numbers.

Peter Nguyen, a privacy specialist from Protect My Data, emphasized the significance of hotel reservation information, stating that scammers can craft highly convincing messages with just a few personal details. He urged travelers to exercise caution when dealing with unexpected messages regarding their bookings, payments, refunds, or reservations.

Nguyen advised guests to refrain from engaging with suspicious messages requesting payments, codes, logins, or verification, even if they mention a property from BWH Hotels or an upcoming reservation. He emphasized the importance of verifying information through official channels and avoiding clicking on links from dubious sources.

As travelers gear up for summer getaways and quick trips, the heightened risk of hotel-related scams during this peak travel season is particularly concerning. Nguyen warned guests to remain alert, especially when receiving messages close to their check-in dates, and to treat any unexpected booking communications with skepticism until their authenticity is verified.

In response to the breach, BWH Hotels reassured guests of its commitment to safeguarding personal information and advised them to exercise caution when encountering suspicious communications related to their hotel stays. The hotel chain emphasized the importance of taking preventive measures to protect against fraudulent activities and provided guidelines for ensuring data security and avoiding potential scams.
