A woman was deeply saddened when a portion of her parents’ gravestone was stolen, likely for its valuable granite that can fetch a high price on the illicit market. Lynne Brown, who was paying her respects at Lambhill Cemetery in Glasgow on what would have been her mother’s 85th birthday, was shocked to find that three large pieces of granite edging surrounding the grave had been removed.
Lynne suspects that the granite was stolen due to its high worth, durability, and ease of resale. She expressed a mix of emotions, ranging from sadness to anger, upon discovering the theft, noting that the pieces were securely fixed in place and the removal would have required significant effort. The incident was reported to the local authorities, with Police Scotland confirming that investigations are ongoing.
Expressing her dismay at the situation, Lynne emphasized the sentimental value of the gravestone, which was renewed in 2017 after her mother’s passing. She expressed concerns about the potential recurrence of theft and the desire for justice in resolving the matter. Glasgow City Council conveyed their support for investigating the theft and expressed sympathy for Lynne’s distress.
The stolen granite, valued at over £1700, holds significant sentimental value for Lynne and her family, who had it installed as a tribute to their late parents.
