“Retired Journalist Relies on Meal Replacement Drinks Post-Throat Cancer Surgery”

Glenn Deir, a retired journalist residing in St. John’s, shares his journey of being reliant on meal replacement drinks post-throat surgery due to cancer. The six-pack-a-day routine didn’t involve beer but Boost, a nutritional supplement aimed at sustaining life during a challenging period.

Following a significant surgery in mid-July that removed cancerous tissues from his throat, Deir’s diet transitioned to Boost drinks and pureed foods to ensure his nourishment. Despite the unappealing appearance and taste of the blended meals, the necessity to maintain his health led to a significant weight loss of 15 pounds.

Struggling with swallow tests post-surgery, Deir faced challenges as water accidentally entered his airway during examinations, impeding the transition to solid foods. However, the dedicated healthcare team at St. Clare’s Hospital in St. John’s remained committed to his recovery, planning for radiation treatment and chemotherapy before rescheduling a canceled moose hunting trip.

The treatment phase, marked by radiation sessions and swallowing exercises, presented physical and emotional hurdles for Deir. Despite the difficulties, his perseverance paid off when he passed a swallow test in late November, marking a turning point in his recovery journey.

Transitioning from liquid diets to solid foods, Deir’s progress in intensive swallow therapy enabled him to enjoy foods like bananas, mac and cheese, and apple pie after a five-month hiatus. While challenges persist, including reduced saliva production and occasional coughing, Deir remains optimistic about regaining his ability to enjoy meals without restrictions.

As Deir continues his recovery, his story serves as a testament to resilience and the importance of perseverance in overcoming health challenges.
