Prince William emphasized the importance of addressing homelessness, stating that it is a societal issue that impacts everyone. Celebrating the third anniversary of his Homewards project, aimed at reducing homelessness in the UK, the Prince of Wales highlighted the need for increased discussions and focused efforts to provide permanent housing for those in need.
During an event at the Tate Modern museum in London, Prince William announced that the project had secured £7.7 million in funding, in addition to £50 million support from Lloyds bank, to propel the initiative towards achieving its goals by 2023. Despite the progress made, he acknowledged the ongoing challenge and the necessity for further actions, especially in the six trial locations where innovative reforms are being implemented to tackle homelessness effectively.
Addressing the lack of attention given to homelessness, Prince William stressed the importance of raising awareness and promoting dialogue on the issue. He highlighted the cultural indifference towards homelessness globally, emphasizing the need for collective efforts to address the problem more seriously and effectively.
The Homewards project, currently being tested in six locations across the UK, has shown promising results in providing stable housing and employment opportunities to individuals at risk of homelessness. With investments and partnerships in place, including a furniture collaboration to support tenancies, the project aims to prevent homelessness and create a positive impact on individuals’ lives.
Looking ahead, Prince William expressed his commitment to expanding the project’s reach and effectiveness nationwide. He emphasized the success stories of individuals who have benefitted from Homewards, showcasing the tangible impact of the initiative in providing homes, jobs, and hope for a brighter future.
During his visit to one of the Homewards locations in Aberdeen, Prince William witnessed firsthand the positive outcomes of the program, with 31 individuals now living in homes created through the project. Reflecting on past visits and engagements with the homelessness charity, the Prince highlighted the significance of prevention efforts and the transformative effects of Homewards on the lives of those it has supported.
