More than 300 individuals have been taken into custody in a significant crackdown on organized criminal activities, resulting in the confiscation of drugs, cigarettes, and other illicit items, along with the seizure of £1 million in cash.
According to the National Police Chiefs’ Council, out of the 362 arrests conducted during the operation spanning five days, 57 were individuals who had recently arrived in the UK by crossing the Channel on boats.
The nationwide enforcement operation, carried out from June 15 to June 20, also led to the seizure of over £1 million in cash, illegal tobacco, vapes, and cigarettes valued at more than £700,000, as well as 92 cars and 31 e-bikes. Additionally, approximately £131,000 worth of drugs was confiscated, as reported by the NPCC.
The operations specifically targeted organized immigration crimes at various establishments, including barber shops, vape stores, car washes, food production facilities, and nail salons. These businesses are often exploited by criminal syndicates for activities such as concealing illegal labor, exploiting vulnerable migrants, and laundering proceeds from illicit activities.
In a collaborative effort involving 39 police forces nationwide and agencies like the Home Office, Immigration Enforcement, and Trading Standards, DCC Wendy Gunney, the lead of the organized immigration crime domestic taskforce, emphasized the collective efforts to combat money laundering, drug trafficking, modern slavery, and human trafficking within local businesses.
Gunney highlighted the intention to impose civil penalties on business owners and individuals associated with employing migrants through illegal practices, emphasizing a zero-tolerance approach towards exploitation in the UK.
The minister for border security and asylum, Alex Norris, commended the coordinated efforts to target and dismantle organized immigration crime, underscoring the ongoing actions to address illegal practices and return individuals without valid residency status.
The results of this focused collaboration reflect a commitment to curb criminal influence on local communities and ensure the safety of residents.
