A nine-year-old boy, after an eight-year wait, has received a life-saving heart transplant, marking a significant milestone in his battle with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS). Dáithí Mac Gabhann was diagnosed with HLHS at birth in 2016 and underwent his first major surgery at just four days old.
The long wait for a suitable donor heart led to a transformative advocacy effort by Dáithí and his family, influencing changes to organ donation laws in Northern Ireland. Their persistence paid off when Dáithí underwent a successful heart transplant at the NHS Freeman Hospital in Newcastle, where he was greeted with cheers from nurses and the iconic tune “Eye of the Tiger.”
Expressing immense gratitude, Dáithí’s family shared the emotional news on social media, highlighting the joy of receiving the “gift of life” through the new heart. Following the surgery, Dáithí is expected to remain in Newcastle for three more weeks before returning home to Northern Ireland.
Dáithí’s medical journey has been marked by challenges, including complications that necessitated a heart transplant due to backward blood flow in his heart valves. Despite these hurdles, the community rallied behind the Donate4Dáithí campaign, raising awareness about organ donation and advocating for legislative changes to streamline the process in Northern Ireland.
With the successful implementation of “Dáithí’s Law” on June 1, 2023, Northern Ireland became the final region in the United Kingdom to adopt an opt-out system for organ donation. The outpouring of support also translated into a substantial fundraising effort, with a GoFundMe campaign raising over €12,800 (£11,000) to aid Dáithí’s journey towards a new heart and a brighter future.
