Incredible footage captures the moment a newborn infant was rescued alive from beneath the rubble of a collapsed building in Venezuela following two powerful earthquakes. The country was struck by 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude quakes on Wednesday, resulting in over 1,400 confirmed deaths and more than 70,000 people reported missing.
Amidst the tragedy, stories of hope emerged, including the miraculous rescue of children trapped in debris. A newborn baby was found alive 32 hours after the initial quake, with the mother also being rescued later. Emotional scenes unfolded as the baby, wrapped in a pink blanket, was brought out from a damaged house in La Guaira, with onlookers cheering and expressing relief.
Experts noted that the consecutive earthquakes were some of the strongest to hit Venezuela in over a century, causing widespread building collapses in La Guaira and other regions. Amidst the devastation, rescuers were moved to tears when an 11-year-old boy was also found alive under the rubble. A local witness emphasized the importance of unity and valuing life in the face of such disasters.
Geophysicist Marcos Ferreira highlighted the destructive impact of the back-to-back quakes, known as a doublet event, comparing it to a similar tragedy in Turkey and Syria in 2023. International rescue teams, including those from the UK, have been aiding in the search for survivors, with efforts focused on the critical first 48 to 72 hours post-disaster. However, there have been concerns raised about the speed of the government’s response to the crisis.
