“New Initiative Launched to Find Britain’s Longest-Missing Person”

A new initiative to create an updated image of Britain’s longest-missing individual has been launched after 67 years since her disappearance. Mary Flanagan went missing at the age of 16, vanishing on the day she was expected to attend her employer’s New Year’s Eve celebration.

Having disappeared on December 31, 1959, Mary’s case stands as the nation’s most extended missing person investigation. Missing People has now initiated a renewed effort to locate her almost seven decades later.

An age-progressed image of Mary, who would now be 83 years old, has been crafted to depict her potential appearance today. The picture portrays the East London resident with short, grey, curly hair resembling her hairstyle at the time of her disappearance.

The last known sighting of Mary was near West Ham tube station, where she was seen departing her family residence to attend the event at the Tate & Lyle sugar refinery in Silvertown, London.

Reopening the case in 2013, Mary’s family suggested the possibility that she had eloped with a man named Tom McGinty, an Irish laborer she had been frequently seen with before her disappearance. However, the Metropolitan Police failed to locate the suspect due to limited information, including his true identity. There were speculations that Mary might have been pregnant, prompting her to flee.

Her family speculated that disclosing a pregnancy out of wedlock at 16 to Catholic parents would have been a significant challenge. The recent appeal coincides with what would have been Mary’s 83rd birthday on June 9.

A representative from Missing People remarked, “This week marks Mary Flanagan’s birthday. Mary, who was 16 years old, went missing on December 31, 1959, from Newham, London.”

The spokesperson added, “The image on the left showcases an age progression of Mary at the age of 83. Mary, whenever you are ready, we are here to support you; we can listen, guide you on the assistance you may require, convey a message on your behalf, and help ensure your safety.”
