“Mother Warns of Garden Plant Poisoning Risk”

A mother of four is cautioning fellow parents about the risks associated with a common garden plant after her one-year-old daughter was poisoned during a family outing.

Daisy Hall’s youngest child, Winnie, inadvertently ingested a rhododendron while in her stroller at Attingham Park in Shropshire. Daisy, 34, recounted, “I placed her back in the stroller, and during our walk, she must have grabbed a plant and started chewing on it.”

Upon realizing the incident, Daisy researched online and learned that the flower is highly poisonous to humans. She promptly took Winnie to the hospital, where doctors administered activated charcoal mixed with water to prevent the absorption of the toxin into her body.

Following treatment, the toddler was monitored with an ECG for six hours before being discharged. She received further observation at home for an additional 24 hours. Rhododendrons contain grayanotoxins, toxic compounds that can cause symptoms like nausea, dizziness, vertigo, blurred vision, and vomiting if ingested by humans or animals.

Fortunately, Daisy, who had recently taken up gardening, was able to identify the plant and sought advice from her mother, Debbie, a nurse, before contacting NHS 111 en route to the hospital.

Reflecting on the experience, Daisy emphasized the critical timing of administering charcoal, stating, “If I had waited for an ambulance, she would likely have exceeded the charcoal’s effective window.”

At the hospital, Winnie received prompt treatment with charcoal. Daisy described the challenge of administering the charcoal, resulting in them being covered in black.

Thankfully, Winnie fully recovered. Daisy’s cautionary tale has garnered more than 7.1 million views since she shared it online. Responding to feedback, she noted that people have become more vigilant about checking potentially harmful plants and learning from her experience.
