A man who previously saved a police officer’s life before winning a £1 million prize in the EuroMillions lottery has tragically passed away in a suspected hit-and-run incident while riding his bicycle.
Anthony Canty, aged 39, administered CPR to a police officer who suffered a heart attack on a bus in April 2020. Shortly after this heroic act, Anthony became a millionaire with a £1 million win in the EuroMillions draw.
Despite the police officer’s recovery and words of “good karma happens to good people” shared at the time of Anthony’s lottery win, tragedy struck six years later. Anthony, a father of two, lost his life in a collision in Tiptree, Essex, while cycling early in the morning on May 21. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries four days later.
Following the incident, an 18-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of several offenses related to the collision. The investigation is ongoing as the police continue to gather information.
Social media has been flooded with tributes to Anthony, with many describing him as a “true gentleman.” Friends and acquaintances expressed their disbelief and sadness over his untimely death, highlighting his positive impact on those around him.
Anthony, survived by his wife Katie and two daughters, won the £1 million EuroMillions prize on May 5, 2020. Recounting the moment of realization, he shared how initially he thought he had won £100,000 until his wife confirmed they were actually millionaires.
Despite his newfound wealth, Anthony expressed his intentions to continue working. At the time of his passing, he was employed by a local building materials supplier.
Essex Police have appealed for witnesses to provide any information related to the fatal collision. They specifically seek details regarding a black Ford KA seen in the area around the time of the incident on the morning of May 21. Witnesses are urged to come forward and quote reference number 174 from that date if they have relevant information.
