Britons intending to visit one of the world’s largest theme parks are on high alert following a measles-infected individual spending 11 hours there. Health authorities in Los Angeles issued an urgent warning after confirming the infected person’s visit to Universal Studios, Hollywood on July 26. The contagious visitor’s identity remains undisclosed, raising concerns that thousands of park visitors may have been exposed to the virus.
Los Angeles County Department of Public Health officials are actively tracing and notifying individuals who may have had contact with the infected visitor. Universal Studios Hollywood, a popular tourist destination attracting about 9.6 million visitors annually, poses a potential risk to those who came into contact with the virus carrier, including British holidaymakers.
Measles, known as one of the most contagious diseases globally, can infect up to nine out of 10 unvaccinated individuals exposed to it. The virus spreads through tiny droplets released when an infected person coughs or sneezes, remaining airborne for up to two hours after the carrier leaves the area.
Dr. Muntu Davis, Los Angeles County Public Health Officer, advises park visitors from that day to ensure full protection against measles, especially amidst summer travel where the risk of exposure to infectious diseases is heightened. Confirming immunity and receiving the MMR vaccine, if necessary, is crucial before attending crowded events or traveling.
The MMR vaccine is the most effective defense against measles, cutting the infection risk by approximately 97% after two doses. Early symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes, followed by a distinctive red rash that starts on the face and spreads across the body.
Measles can lead to severe complications, especially in vulnerable populations like infants, pregnant women, individuals with weakened immune systems, and the unvaccinated. In critical cases, complications such as pneumonia, brain inflammation, hospitalization, and rarely, death, can occur.
Individuals experiencing symptoms post-theme park visit are advised to stay home, avoid public spaces, and contact a healthcare provider by phone before seeking medical attention to prevent spreading the infection to others.
