Markham is gearing up for a thrilling weekend as it hosts the NTT IndyCar Series, including the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy. While IndyCar has a history in Toronto since 1986, this event marks the first race outside the city with a brand-new track layout covering 3.52 kilometers and featuring 12 turns. The track will traverse areas such as the Unionville GO station, York University Markham Campus, and the Markham Pan Am Centre.
To facilitate access to the event, attendees are encouraged to utilize GO Transit, York Region Transit, or drive via Highway 407, with parking available west of the event grounds. Metrolinx is enhancing Stouffville Line services for convenient transportation to and from the track. Additional trips have been scheduled on various routes to accommodate the influx of spectators.
Residents in Markham have been coping with track construction impacts, including limited parking at Unionville GO, repaved roads, and the installation of grandstands and retainer walls. Several roads, including portions of Enterprise Boulevard, Kennedy Road, YMCA Boulevard, University Boulevard, and South Unionville Boulevard, will be closed until Monday morning, with some restrictions extending until August 27 for post-event teardown.
The main event on Sunday will feature the IndyCar race, with Spaniard Alex Palou leading the points standings and being a top contender for victory. Notable drivers to watch include Pato O’Ward, Kyle Kirkwood, David Malukas, Christian Lundgaard, and Rinus Veekay. Local talent like Anthony Martella and Chase Pelletier will also participate in support series races.
Drivers are adjusting to the new Markham track layout, which offers a smoother surface compared to Toronto’s bumpy roads. The layout presents challenges with elevation changes and tight sections, garnering mixed reactions from competitors. Tickets for the weekend races are available on the event website, with Friday’s practice and qualifying sessions open to the public for free as part of Fan Friday, with donations encouraged for Make-A-Wish Canada.
