The inaugural Ontario Honda Dealers Indy at Markham encountered a setback right at the starting line. The first day of practice and qualifying for the sole IndyCar event in Canada had to be called off on Friday due to unfinished track construction, preventing officials from conducting the necessary safety checks. Organizers have indicated plans to reschedule all the missed track sessions from the first day to Saturday’s agenda.
This year marks Markham’s debut as the host city for the event, which was relocated from Toronto’s Exhibition Place after being held there since its inception in 1986. Expressing disappointment, IndyCar president J. Douglas Boles stated, “IndyCar is incredibly disappointed that our promoter was not able to complete the track build on time, despite significant support from our team on site.”
Long-time race attendees Mark Coburn from Kitchener, Ont., and Scott Stobo from Waterloo, Ont., who have been going to the event for two decades, made the trip to Markham on Friday morning. Coburn shared mixed feelings about the delay in practice and qualifying sessions, emphasizing the importance of ensuring track safety to avoid any mishaps that could tarnish the event’s reputation.
The shift of the IndyCar race from downtown Toronto to Markham was announced last September by IndyCar and the City of Markham. The new temporary circuit, constructed for the first time this week, spans between Kennedy Road, Enterprise Boulevard, the Unionville GO tracks, and Highway 407. Some unfinished elements include a pedestrian bridge over Enterprise Boulevard and safety fencing modifications for marshals.
Despite the unexpected challenges, the Ontario government and the federal government pledged financial support for the event, with Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti confirming significant capital investments for infrastructure enhancements. Friday’s events at the IndyCar race were open to the public, with donations to the Make-A-Wish Foundation encouraged instead of ticket purchases, attracting a sizable crowd under warm weather conditions.
While some logistical issues and lack of amenities were noted by attendees, off-track activities proceeded as scheduled. Saturday is expected to be a busy day at the track, with practice sessions and qualifying rounds scheduled, promising an exciting showcase for fans. Additional races by USF2000 Championship, USF Pro 2000, Radical Cup Canada, and NASCAR Canada Series will also take place over the weekend.
Reflecting on the day’s events, Stobo remarked, “We talked this morning about maybe coming back after today. I think we’ve had our fill.”
