A man has been sentenced to life in prison for the rape and murder of his estranged wife, where he tried to stage her death as a suicide. Michael Thompson, aged 56, was found guilty of subjecting Kimberley Thompson to prolonged domestic abuse, including controlling behavior and physical violence, before suffocating her in their Northampton residence on August 9 last year.
During the trial that spanned seven weeks, it was revealed that Thompson had made numerous recordings of his wife and claimed they had consensual intercourse before discovering her lifeless body surrounded by pills and alcohol containers. However, forensic analysis found minimal traces of caffeine, paracetamol, and codeine in her system, debunking his narrative.
The couple, who had been married for 19 years and shared two children, were going through a divorce at the time of the tragic incident. Despite the ongoing legal proceedings, Thompson was convicted of rape, murder, and two counts of obstructing justice by a unanimous jury decision.
In a packed courtroom, Judge Nirmal Shant KC sentenced Thompson to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 33 years. The judge criticized Thompson for his lack of remorse and cowardly refusal to face the consequences of his actions, highlighting the profound impact of his crimes on the victim’s family and loved ones.
