A father shared his harrowing experience of nearly drowning in beach mud with his son but survived by using a skill he learned while training as a zoologist in rainforests.
James Downs, 47, and his 11-year-old son Oliver, both enthusiastic fishermen, found themselves trapped in soft mud up to their chests while digging for bait as the tide rose. Despite attempting to call for help, nearby beach visitors did not grasp the severity of the situation.
Recalling the terrifying moment, James mentioned contemplating the possibility of having to swim with his son to survive, emphasizing the importance of teaching children how to swim to prevent such incidents.
This incident underscores the significance of water safety, coinciding with The Mirror’s Save Lives for Sam campaign aimed at preventing water-related fatalities. The UK witnessed a distressing spike in water-related deaths during a heatwave between May 24 and 31, with 19 casualties reported.
Fortunately, James’s quick thinking, drawing from his zoologist training, enabled him to use a bait pump as a probing tool to navigate through the mud towards the shore at St Mary’s Bay in Kent. His past experiences in Australian rainforests helped him employ techniques to traverse challenging terrains.
James opted not to contact emergency services, deeming it more effective to act swiftly. He described the physical strain of each step while carrying his son through the mud, likening it to weightlifting, fueled by adrenaline and cortisol.
Upon reaching the shore, they narrowly escaped the encroaching tide, with James exhausted but relieved. Reflecting on the ordeal, James emphasized the need for vigilance around mudflats and soft sand along coastal areas.
Local authorities have responded by installing additional warning signs to educate visitors about the risks associated with soft mud and sand. Collaboration with environmental agencies and emergency services remains crucial for beach safety.
The RNLI commended James and Oliver’s resilience, advising the public to promptly alert coastguard services in water-related emergencies. The coordinated efforts of maritime rescue teams, including RNLI crews, ensure swift responses to distress calls.
In a tragic incident elsewhere, a father lost his life while trying to save his children on a UK beach, highlighting the unpredictable dangers of coastal environments. Efforts to enhance water safety protocols and public awareness are critical in preventing similar tragedies.
