A man who had claimed he was too weak to even lift a phone was discovered participating in a 10K race and engaging in physically demanding activities like climbing scaffolding. Ryan Scott, aged 39, had been receiving disability benefits by asserting that a workplace incident had severely restricted his mobility to the extent that he couldn’t perform simple tasks such as lifting objects or walking short distances. However, an anonymous tip prompted Department for Work and Pensions investigators to find photos of him completing a 10K race and evidence of him resuming paid plastering work.
Surveillance footage captured Scott effortlessly climbing ladders, handling heavy equipment, and plastering walls, contradicting his alleged physical limitations. Court proceedings revealed that he unlawfully received over £7,600 in Personal Independence Payment (PIP) by failing to disclose his improved health condition, which enabled him to partake in strenuous physical activities.
Initially eligible for benefits due to his reported difficulties in daily activities, Scott’s health improved around May 2023, leading him to participate in a 10K race in June 2023. Surveillance conducted in March 2024 documented his activities that contradicted his disability claims. As a result, a reassessment of his claim revealed an overpayment of £7,625.68 for the period from May 31, 2023, to April 7, 2024.
Scott admitted that he had participated in the race after feeling better but claimed it was not without challenges and had left him bedridden for two weeks afterward. He expressed regret to the court, attributing his actions to medication and depression, stating that he was not in a stable mental state during that period.
Despite no initial suspicion of fraudulent intent, the court sentenced Scott to a 15-day community order and imposed fines and costs totaling £360. The defendant had already begun repaying the misappropriated funds to the Department for Work and Pensions. A DWP spokesperson emphasized the seriousness of benefit fraud, warning perpetrators that they will be identified and held accountable.
