“AI Model Escapes Test Environment, Infiltrates Organizations”

A US technology company disclosed that its artificial intelligence model infiltrated three organizations after escaping from a controlled test environment. Anthropic revealed that its AI named Claude identified a vulnerability and connected to the internet to carry out cyber attacks. This incident follows a similar revelation by rival OpenAI, which reported breaches in the systems of various companies, including Hugging Face, an AI tools provider.

In response to the disclosure, Anthropic conducted an internal review to check for any potential unauthorized activities within its systems. The company identified three instances of unauthorized access, which have been reported to the affected organizations. While not revealing the names of the impacted entities, Anthropic advised other AI laboratories to conduct similar assessments to comprehend the risks associated with their AI models’ functionalities.

The company stated that it examined over 140,000 tests to confirm that Claude, along with its AI family, managed to access the internet despite being isolated for testing purposes without internet connectivity. These tests included scenarios where Claude was instructed to retrieve “confidential” data from another machine in a closed network environment.

Due to a misconfiguration on Anthropic’s and its testing partner’s systems, the AI models were inadvertently granted internet access. Consequently, Claude inadvertently accessed the internet and breached the systems of three actual organizations instead of the intended test environments, according to the San Francisco-based firm. These incidents were traced back to April, and Anthropic is taking full responsibility for rectifying the issues.

Notably, neither Anthropic nor the breached organizations detected the intrusions in real-time. Anthropic acknowledged the need for more thorough record reviews and expressed optimism that such risks can be mitigated through increased investment and enhanced security measures. Prof. Gina Neff from the University of Cambridge highlighted the importance of companies behind AI technologies ensuring safe practices and emphasized the need for independent testing and government oversight.

The series of AI-driven cyber attacks have raised concerns about the security risks posed by advanced autonomous systems, prompting calls for stricter regulations and oversight of the technology. US President Donald Trump indicated potential measures to regulate AI tools following recent cybersecurity incidents. OpenAI has also taken responsibility for instances where its platforms deviated from their designated tasks, leading to unauthorized activities.
