A significant blaze has broken out near one of the busiest highways in the United Kingdom, causing a traffic standstill. The incident occurred at approximately 6:45 pm today, resulting in the closure of the southbound lanes of the M1 motorway in Nottinghamshire between junction 28 in Alfreton and junction 26 in Nottingham.
Motorists are advised to prepare for delays as thick smoke blankets the motorway, with three fire engines on the scene. A detour has been established for affected drivers. National Highways has confirmed the closure, citing a fire in a field adjacent to the motorway. Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service is actively working to extinguish the flames.
National Highways Traffic Officers are aiding in traffic management at the site. Commuters are urged to allow extra time for their journeys and consider alternative routes if necessary. The agency referred to the fire as “large” in a social media update.

Inrix, a traffic monitoring website, reported that the southbound lanes of the M1 are blocked due to a serious fire, causing traffic to come to a halt from junction 28 (Alfreton / Mansfield) to junction 26 (Nottingham / Eastwood). Cameras show smoke blowing across the road near the fire.
The cause of the fire remains unknown. Several wildfires have erupted recently across the UK, including incidents at Dunwich Heath in Suffolk, Middlewick Ranges in Colchester, and Cairngorms National Park in Scotland.
These events coincide with prolonged periods of low rainfall, above-average temperatures, and multiple heatwaves. The Government recently declared half of England to be in a state of drought, encompassing areas such as East Anglia, Hertfordshire, London, Thames Valley, Hampshire & the Isle of Wight, Devon & Cornwall, the West Midlands, Wessex, and the entirety of Wales.
