Iran has decided to pull out of an agreement with the United States due to what it perceives as American breaches. According to Iran’s Deputy Minister for Legal and International Affairs, Kazem Gharibabadi, Iran will assert full control over the Strait of Hormuz regardless of the consequences. This move will encompass Oman’s share of the vital waterway.
Gharibabadi stated that for national security reasons, Iran must take charge of the entire strait during times of conflict, even though Oman typically shares control. The ongoing conflict has centered on the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
In response to joint US-Israeli attacks on key Iranian facilities, Iran retaliated by closing the crucial trade route, through which a significant portion of global oil trade flows. The US and Iran previously signed an agreement on June 17 to end the conflict within 60 days and work towards a lasting peace deal to restore international shipping through the strait and address Iran’s nuclear program dispute.
However, President Donald Trump declared an end to the ceasefire during a NATO summit in Türkiye, expressing disdain for further negotiations with Iran. Gharibabadi accused the US of violating and dismantling the agreement, particularly through a naval blockade on Iranian ports.
Reports indicate that Trump announced plans to target Iran’s power plants, bridges, and energy facilities in the coming week. He also mentioned imminent military strikes on Iran.
