A young woman was denied boarding a flight during a heatwave for wearing shorts and a crop top deemed too revealing by airline staff. Edda Pilz, also known as Edda Elisa online, encountered the issue at the boarding gate while attempting to fly with Lufthansa.
Despite dressing in sports attire to combat the high temperatures exceeding 30C, the 25-year-old faced rejection from boarding the flight. A Lufthansa employee stopped her at the gate, asserting that her clothing looked too revealing, prompting the influencer to be denied entry.
When Edda questioned the employee about the refusal, she was told that she appeared “naked” due to her outfit. Although she considered her attire to be standard sportswear, she complied with the request to cover up by putting on a jacket. However, she was required to zip the jacket completely before being allowed to board the aircraft.
Expressing her willingness to adhere to rules, Edda requested clarity on the dress code guidelines imposed. In response, Lufthansa stated that the language used by their staff did not align with the company’s standards. The airline emphasized the importance of passengers wearing attire suitable for public travel that respects the comfort of all passengers from diverse backgrounds.
Lufthansa’s policy allows staff to exercise discretion in enforcing appropriate clothing standards and addresses any reported inconsistencies internally. Edda was eventually able to board the flight after complying with the jacket requirement. Airlines globally retain the right to refuse entry to passengers wearing attire considered offensive or unsuitable under their terms and conditions.
This practice aims to prevent conflicts among passengers, ensure safety during emergencies, and maintain hygiene standards. The concept of “appropriate” clothing remains subjective, often relying on staff judgment to determine compliance with airline regulations.
