Thousands of travelers and football enthusiasts gearing up for trips abroad have received an urgent caution. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has updated its travel advisory for Mexico due to planned demonstrations by a teachers’ union that could disrupt travel near Mexico City International Airport (AICM). Officials recommend that travelers allocate extra time for their journeys and keep in touch with airlines and tour operators to account for potential delays and interruptions.
This alert comes shortly before Mexico’s commencement as a co-host of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with the United States and Canada, expecting millions of international visitors to arrive in the country from June 11 to July 19.
The United Kingdom is expected to send tens of thousands of fans to the tournament, with Mexico City set to host key matches, including the opening game at the renowned Estadio Azteca.
The initial strike occurred on June 3, raising concerns about possible future actions. The FCDO stated that airport authorities have warned the public of potential disruptions and advised allowing extra time for airport journeys.
Travelers are advised to monitor local media and stay in touch with airlines or travel agents for the latest updates. This latest warning highlights the security risks faced by visitors to Mexico, where the FCDO already advises against non-essential travel to various regions due to crime and violence concerns.
Areas under the cautionary advice include parts of Baja California, Chihuahua, Sinaloa, Tamaulipas, Zacatecas, and Michoacán, along with sections of Jalisco, Guerrero, and Chiapas.
The Government also warns that travel insurance may be invalidated if holidaymakers ignore official advice and visit restricted areas.
Mexico has become a popular destination for British tourists, attracted by its beautiful beaches, resorts, and cultural offerings, while the World Cup is expected to draw a significant number of international visitors this summer.
Supporters traveling to the tournament are encouraged to review the latest travel guidance before departure, especially if planning domestic travel between host cities or tourist attractions. Additional information can be found on the FCDO website.
