A woman aged 24 lost her life in a hit-and-run incident in North Belfast, as confirmed by the police. Raven Adams, hailing from Tipperary, was declared dead at the scene in the York Street vicinity of the city. Additionally, a 22-year-old man sustained severe injuries.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) was alerted about a collision involving two pedestrians at approximately 2:40 am. Subsequently, the driver of the vehicle, a 22-year-old male, absconded but was later apprehended by officers in the nearby Cavehill area, as stated by the PSNI.
Detective Inspector Stewart from the Police Service’s Collision Investigation Unit reported, “We received a report at around 2:40 am about a single-vehicle crash involving two pedestrians. It was reported that the pedestrians were hit by a vehicle, whose driver, a 22-year-old male, fled the scene and was subsequently arrested by officers in the nearby Cavehill area. He is currently in police custody as investigations into the incident continue.”
“Officers responded to the scene, alongside emergency service colleagues, offering medical assistance to both pedestrians. Tragically, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene, while the man was transported to the hospital for treatment of serious injuries.”
“The road has now been completely reopened after several earlier closures in the area.”
The PSNI has urged anyone possessing information about the crash or dash-cam footage of the incident to reach out to the police through a witness appeal form, quoting reference 181 16/07/26, or to call 101.
Local DUP MLA, Phillip Brett, expressed deep sorrow upon learning about the fatal crash. He extended his heartfelt condolences to Raven’s family, friends, and loved ones, urging anyone with relevant information to contact the PSNI to assist the investigation.
“This is a profoundly sad day for our community. Let us all respect the privacy of those affected and allow the PSNI the necessary time and space for a thorough investigation.”
Brett also commended the efforts of the police, ambulance service, and all emergency responders who dealt with the challenging circumstances at the scene, expressing solidarity with all those impacted by the tragic event.
