At least one individual has lost their life and multiple others have sustained injuries following an explosion in a popular Italian tourist destination that led to the sudden collapse of a building.
The deceased man was discovered among the debris after a two-story structure in Porto Sant ‘Elpidio was devastated by a powerful blast believed to have been triggered by a gas leak at approximately 6 am on Saturday morning.
At the time of the explosion, two families were inhabiting the premises, which caused significant tremors throughout the town, prompting an immediate emergency reaction.
Trapped beneath the rubble were a child, the victim’s elderly parents who received on-site medical attention before being swiftly transported to a hospital, and a woman who was later airlifted to a medical facility in Torrette di Ancona.
Rescue efforts are ongoing for another woman who is suspected to be trapped within the debris, with firefighters utilizing drones, dogs, and excavators in a frantic search to locate her.
The building was completely decimated by the explosion, as confirmed by local news sources, which also resulted in the shattering of windows in nearby shops and structures.
