Organized crime syndicates have been reported to involve children as young as five in theft operations, as disclosed by law enforcement authorities. These children are utilized by their parents who exploit the fact that security personnel are unlikely to intervene as they snatch high-end items, according to acting police sergeant Jo Van Wyk.
Sergeant Van Wyk shared insights with the media during Operation Terminos in Wembley, North West London, a week-long initiative targeting theft, anti-social behavior, e-bike violations, and retail crime. She showcased photos of wanted shoplifters, highlighting their connections to local businesses where stolen goods are often traded, particularly food items like rice sold to restaurants.
In recent incidents, organized criminal groups, sometimes involving children, have been implicated in thefts totaling £10,000, including high-value sunglasses. The officer emphasized that even very young children, such as five-year-olds, are being used due to the perceived immunity from security measures.
During the coordinated efforts of 40 Metropolitan Police officers last week, over 32 suspects were apprehended, 64 illegal e-bikes and scooters were confiscated, and five knives were recovered. The operation also targeted modified vehicles capable of exceeding the legal speed limits, with specialized pursuit officers swiftly apprehending suspects, including one posing as a delivery rider found in possession of suspected cannabis.
According to Sergeant Nick Wemborn from the Met’s Interceptor unit, disguising drug activities as delivery services is a common tactic among criminals. The operation also led to the seizure of vehicles, such as fast food delivery bikes, and the enforcement of traffic laws related to illegal e-bikes and scooters, which pose significant safety risks when operated above legal speed thresholds.
Chief Inspector Yu Zhang, who oversaw the operation, emphasized the community-focused approach aimed at curbing offenses that impact local residents, including retail crime, drug-related activities, and the unsafe use of illegal e-bikes. The operation’s success reflects a commitment to neighborhood safety and crime prevention, with a noticeable decrease in crime rates reported across North West London, including a 10% reduction in shoplifting incidents in Brent.
