Home security camera footage captured the intense moment when law enforcement apprehended a man suspected of the murder of former Member of Parliament Ann Widdecombe, located approximately 300 miles away from her residence.
The 78-year-old former government official, now a television personality, was discovered deceased at her home in Haytor on Dartmoor around 11:40 a.m. on Thursday, having suffered severe injuries. A 28-year-old white British male was taken into custody on Saturday under suspicion of her murder, with video footage showcasing his arrest.
The video, shared via Sky News, depicted a shirtless individual being arrested by armed police officers upon their arrival at a residence in South Yorkshire.
Subsequently, the man in handcuffs was escorted through a garden away from the property in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, at approximately 9 p.m. The suspect has since been re-apprehended on suspicion of involvement in acts of terrorism.
The investigation into the veteran politician’s demise is now being led by counter-terrorism authorities. Widdecombe’s passing was announced on Friday, July 10, without initial mention of her murder.
Devon and Cornwall Police later confirmed the initiation of a murder inquiry. Authorities disclosed that it is believed Widdecombe was assaulted on Wednesday around 12:30 p.m.
A 26-year-old male was initially detained on suspicion of murder but was subsequently released as he was no longer considered a suspect. Laurence Taylor, the head of UK counter-terrorism policing, revealed that new information and evidence had emerged during the murder investigation.
Addressing the developments, Taylor stated, “Expanding upon the progress achieved by our colleagues at Devon and Cornwall Police, we have now obtained fresh information and evidence leading to Counter Terrorism Policing taking charge of the investigation. We are actively pursuing various leads to determine the motive behind this attack.”
